After much research, I have concluded that I am a
Third Culture Kid. [TCK]
According to
Wikipedia:
Third Culture Kids refers to someone who [as a child] has spent a significant period of time in one or more culture(s) other than his or her own, thus integrating elements of those cultures and their own birth culture, into a third culture.
Okay, so my passport country in Philippines but I live in Hong Kong. To be more elaborate:
I have lived in:
- Manila, Philippines (1992 - 1994)
- Hong Kong, China (1994-1998)
- Manila, Philippines (1998 - 2004)
- Hong Kong China (2004 - now)
I'll be moving back to Manila in 2009 or 2010 for college. After college, my future is leaning heavily towards either US or Canada.
TCKs share some common characteristics such as multilingualism, tolerance for other cultures, a never-ending feeling of homesickness for their adopted country and a desire to remain in close contact with friends from their adopted country as well as other TCKs that they have grown up with. On the other hand, moving from country to country often becomes an easy thing for such individuals.
Well, my situation might be a bit different because while I tend to miss Hong Kong when I'm away, everyone I've ever talked to here gets a shitload of "In Manila, I used to..." and any variety of that. I don't necessarily miss the Philippines but there's a lot of nostalgia.
Many TCKs take years to readjust to their passport countries and often suffer a reverse culture shock on their return to their ancestral culture. This is due to their having lived in many countries away from home and acculturated to adapt to these new culture.
I experience reverse culture shock every time I visit Manila. It just becomes awkward; my cousins always have to correct me like "
Hindi dapat ganyan!" [It's not supposed to be like that!]
I'm pretty sure my sister is also a TCK. Her passport country is the US but she lives here in Hong Kong. I'm pretty sure she's not going to be moving back to the US anytime soon.
Actually, there's a lot of TCKs here in Hong Kong. There are Indian TCKs, British TCKs, Filipino TCKs and a lot more so I guess a lot of people here can relate to me.
I am so going to buy a book about TCKs. xD;
